If you make a warp jump and get a freighter battle, look how many enemy fighters there are (it will be displayed in the lower right corner). If the number is 11, then your freighter can be up to 34 slots max. If you don't get 34 slots, then reload your save to before you jumped. (It does not autosave when you disembark on the freighter you saved.).

Ships may also be tied with current slot setup, for instance if you have a ship with only 15 slots there is a extremely slim chance of finding a crashed ship with 40+ slots.
