The Centre de musique romantique française ('centre for French Romantic music') is a French-administered cultural institution, research centre and concert hall, in Venice, in north-eastern Italy. It is housed in the Palazzetto Bru Zane, an annex to the Palazzo Zane Collalto [it], on the Rio Marin [fr] in the sestiere of San Polo. The centre opened in October 2009.[1] It is funded by the Fondation Bru, which also bought, restored and renamed the Casino Zane.[2] The centre uses the name Palazzetto Bru Zane - Centre de musique romantique française.
The Palazzetto[edit]
In 1695, Marino Zane (1639–1709) commissioned the construction of a library (no longer extant) and a casino ('small house') next to the Zane family palace, the Palazzo Zane Collalto [it].[3] This Casino was to house his collection of books and paintings, and to serve as a venue for art, music, and amusement. The architect Antonio Gaspari was responsible for the interior decoration.[4] Palazzo Zane later passed to the Venier family, and in about 1784 was sold to the Collalto.[5]
In 2006 the Fondation Bru bought the Casino from Dominic Habsburg-Lothringen for eight million euros, and then spent more than four million more on restoring it.[6][7] The building now holds offices, studios, a library, and the original concert hall, which now holds an Erard piano from 1902.[6] The frescoes in the salon and on the grand staircase, now attributed to Sebastiano Ricci, were also restored.[8]
Activities[edit]
The centre has a staff of fifteen,[7] and an annual budget of three million euros.[9] It organises concerts, opera performances, and festivals both in Venice and elsewhere.[9][10][6][11] It also organises musicological conferences[12] and publishes books, sheet music,[13] and musical recordings, either independently or in co-operation with more than 40 labels.[14] It operates an internet radio station, Bru Zane Classical Radio, which broadcasts only French Romantic music.[15]

Ensuring the thriving of culture
Preserving our cultural heritage, encouraging the emergence of new talents, broadening the dissemination of knowledge, and sharing emotions, are the priorities that guide the Fondation Bru in its cultural patronage.
Casino Zane
Restoring a Venetian palazzetto
Palazzetto Bru Zane
PNicole Bru, who is a great lover of Venice, was delighted to discover in 2006, away from the tourist track, the discreetly charming Casino Zane. She bought this seventeenth-century palazzetto with the ambitious aim of restoring it to its former glory and returning it to its original purpose as a place devoted to music.
Palazzetto Bru Zane
Reviving French Romantic music
The history of Venice is now highlighted by a new dynamism in every aspect of creative activity. After important restoration work, the casino Zane, has been brought back to life thanks to the Palazzetto Bru Zane – Centre de musique romantique française, which it houses. Through its activities in the fields of research, publishing and the organisation and presentation of concerts, this foundation in Venice aims to obtain greater recognition for French composers of the years 1780–1920 and to revive works that have been unjustly forgotten.
Concert Spirituel
Supporting Hervé Niquet and baroque music
Bru Zane Classical Radio
Drs Jean and Nicole Bru gave their unfailing support to Le Concert Spirituel from the moment it was formed in 1987 by the composer and conductor Hervé Niquet. Nicole Bru perpetuates the foundation’s commitment to the revival of forgotten masterpieces of French Baroque. Le Concert Spirituel is now a reference, both in France and internationally, for the performance of Baroque music on early instruments.
Gilles Caron
Contributing to greater awareness of the works of an artist
Casino Bru Zanesville
Covering the major world conflicts of his time, Gilles Caron was a talented photojournalist. His photographs marked their time. As a great lover of photography, Nicole Bru wished to join with the Fondation Gilles Caron in paying tribute to the skill, audacity and courage of the photojournalist Gilles Caron and in giving him his rightful place in the history of journalism and photography (through exhibitions and publications).

A Success Story
In the twentieth century, the history of the Bru family was closely linked to the meteoric rise of the pharmaceutical company it had created and developed with enthusiasm and success for 60 years.
A Woman of Conviction
“What counts in life is one’s capacity to influence the course of things!” That is the belief of Nicole Bru, doctor, researcher and businesswoman.
